In practice [auctioning in social situations] requires an alternative set of social norms and it takes a huge amount of work to swap in a new set of norms. Bethany and I have done that work but other people won’t and it makes total sense that they won’t, because it’s only worth it if you have people you constantly interact with who also do so. Like Bee and I have in each other (and now the kids who are presumably growing up bilingual, so to speak, with both sets of norms).
